Participants will learn the art of communication with recommenders and acquire the skills necessary to ensure their applications stand out with strong endorsements. Course Objectives: ● Understand the significance of recommendation letters in college applications. ● Learn strategies for selecting the right recommenders. ● Develop a timeline for requesting and following up on letters. ● Master the art of writing a brag sheet that highlights your strengths and achievements. Course Contents: Part 1: Understanding the Importance of Recommendation Letters ● The role of recommendation letters as an objective voice. ● The power of a strong recommendation to endorse activities and explain grade anomalies. Part 2: Selecting Your Recommenders ● Standard choices: counselor and academic teachers from 10th or 11th grade. ● Key considerations: familiarity and affection from the teacher and the teacher’s availability. ● Strategic choices: alumni from your dream school, especially if applying Early Decision. ● Additional recommenders: options and the acceptance of these by various schools. Part 3: Recommendation Letter Timeline ● Winter of Junior Year: Identifying potential recommenders. ● Around Spring Break of Junior Year: Communicate with recommenders and have backups ready. ● End of Junior Year: Completing your brag sheet. ● After Summer of Junior Year: Updating recommenders on summer activities. Part 4: Crafting Your Brag Sheet ● Reviewing brag sheet questions. ● The brainstorming process: envisioning your desired legacy. ● Analyzing Ivy-accepted examples of brag sheets. ● Critiquing less effective brag sheets. ● Interactive Exercise 1: Choose three adjectives from a list that best describes you and elaborate with examples. Part 5: Brag Sheet Writing Exercise ● Interactive Exercise 2: Work on three classic brag sheet prompts: - "What did you learn from my class?" - "What is your proudest achievement?" - "What would you like to study in college?"
