Course Overview: This session is designed to guide students through the process of writing compelling essays for the UC application. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the UC system, what the UCs are looking for in applicants, and how to effectively respond to the Personal Insight Questions (PIQs). Course Objectives: ● Understand the UC system and the components of the UC application. ● Learn the strategies for selecting and responding to UC PIQ prompts. ● Write draft essays for the UC application with personalized feedback. Course Contents: ● What are the components of the UC application? ● What are the UCs looking for? ● What are the UC Personal Insight Question (PIQ) prompts? ● What’s your goal in writing your PIQ essays? ● How to write each PIQ (with examples) - Prompt #1: Leadership - Prompt #2: Creative - Prompt #3: Greatest Talent or Skill - Prompt #4: Significant Educational Opportunity/Barrier - Prompt #5: Significant Challenge - Prompt #6: Academic Subject - Prompt #7: School/Community Service - Prompt #8: What Else? ● A list of past topics other students have chosen ● Things and topics to avoid when writing PIQ essays. ● General tips for assessing if these are the “right” topics for you ● Common mistakes and problems when writing PIQ essays.
